Election day, 2016.  Basically the culmination and tipping point of 18 tense months in our country.  While many sat in front of the TV biting their nails, I spent my afternoon photographing one of my favorite families.  I learned the “dab”, photographed countless giggles, and then we all shared some Pica’s pizza.  All I’m saying is that my election day was better than yours!

I have been fortunate enough to know the Tang family for a few years now, and it was so exciting having them in front of my camera.  I couldn’t help but smile while editing these photos seeing their personalities shine.  Priscilla, Burchard, Penny, and Pauly, thank you for venturing through Ridley Creek State Park with me! Philadelphia Family Photography | Thurber Family

A few weeks ago I received an email from a mom who was concerned about how her family would look in photos.  As she put it, they weren’t perfect and didn’t look like the typical cookie cutter family.  She hadn’t had family photos done in about a decade because of this and this news broke my heart.  Look, y’all…. I never ever try to make the families I photograph look “perfect”.  My goal going in to every single family session is to capture families as they are.  I want to capture the family dynamic and individual personalities. When I look back at my own family photos, the ones I love and cherish are the ones that show personalities.  My brother’s face is puffy from crying, my sister is giving the stink eye to the camera, and I look like a snotty mess with orange cheese doodle residue on my face (and most likely only one sock).  I’m sure during these photos my mom was attempting to pose and coerce us into perfect little children.  But we aren’t.  AND I LOVE IT.  Today, my whole family enjoys these photos and we laugh seeing that even at a young age, our personalities were vibrant (although I would like to point out that I’ve cleaned myself up since then…) Continue reading “Philadelphia Family Photography | Thurber Family”
