Sunbury Wedding Photography | Whispering Oaks Wedding | Malia and Chris

There is a certain love for Autumn that the northeast has.  The colors are vibrant, the air has a crisp, and the light is a constant golden color.  This perfect trio has led to Autumn, and October in general, becoming the most sought after wedding month, with couples praying for a day as gorgeous as the one Malia and Chris snagged.

Malia and Chris were married atop rolling Pennsylvania hills at Whispering Oaks Vineyard in Sunbury, PA.  The muted blue cloudless skies stretched for miles as far as the eye could see, but all eyes were on the happy couple.  Chris dashed away tears as he saw Malia, radiant as ever, walking towards him.  When the sun was setting and guests were settling in for dinner, I asked Malia and Chris if we could sneak outdoors for a few more photos.  Chris responded that he probably isn’t going to remember the food, but he will want to remember running through the vineyards with his new wife in the last sun kissed moments of their wedding day.

The party celebrating Mr. and Mrs. Stroh went well into the night under a super full moon. Love and laughter filled the halls as this truly unforgettable wedding became one of my favorites of 2016.

Bride and groom kiss under an umbrella on their wedding day in Berwick Pennsylvania

Please, just two hours.  Just two hours of no rain.  I woke up Saturday morning, October 1st, and uttered these prayers along with so many other wedding goers.  You see, shooting a wedding in the rain isn’t what I would call fun.  I’ve shot many rainy weddings, and it can be done, very successfully I might add.  But Molly and Jay really needed dry skies.  Molly’s dad had built a beautiful arbor for her and Jay to stand under.  Their best friends had cut fresh flowers from the garden that morning for decorations.  Cakes were being made, flowers were being driven in from Brooklyn, a wedding dress was being picked up from the shop, and signs were being painted. After 2 years of both Molly and Jay battling cancers, cancelling and rescheduling their wedding, and watching their lives take a very different course than expected, they really needed clear skies to stand under as they said their “i do’s”.

The morning of October 1st came just 8 weeks after Molly and Jay decided to celebrate their love in front of family and friends. They had been married the previous spring at the courthouse amid a crazy season of illness.  Molly says, “It was April and we had been engaged since September. We had both been recently diagnosed (with cancer) and it was a really stressful time in our lives- everything felt totally unstable. I remember just telling Jay out of the blue that I wanted to get married- like tomorrow. He instantly got on board and we were in the courthouse 2 days later…. I found a dress in my neighborhood for $50, grabbed some cheap flowers from a deli (really), and headed out. Afterwords we went bar hopping in the city and out to dinner with friends. It was so much fun, so spontaneous, and completely lifted our spirits.”

As Molly walked down the aisle holding onto her brother, the newest chapter of her life was being written.  Jay stood under the arbor, with Molly’s Father’s arm wrapped around his shoulders, and when Molly and Jay held hands, it was just the two of them.  There was no room for illness, pain, or struggle.  There was no thought of Cancer.  It was not invited.

You see, love really does win.  Molly and Jay are living, breathing, dancing proof of that.  The families and friends who worked tirelessly with them to bring Molly’s dream of a fall inspired wedding to life is proof of that.  The collective prayers of guests, crazy photographers, and strangers to interrupt the scheduled rain, is proof of that.  Yes, Molly and Jay have been dealt the short straws in certain areas.  But as they swayed on the dance floor under glowing lanterns and twinkling lights, I felt nothing but joy and happiness for them.

I would like to take this moment to point out that it did rain on October 1st.  After the ceremony, we skirted away from the guests and found a beautiful field for some portraits.  The skies opened and a light rain fell. And guess what?  It was perfectly imperfect in every single way.  Rain has a way of making everything quiet and still; of turning our minds off to distractions and focusing us as clearly as a single rain drop.  Molly said it was one of her favorite moments of the day, and remarkably, quite romantic!

Read on for comments from Jay and Molly, and enjoy some of my favorite photos from their day!

Unfortunately at this time, Molly and Jay are still struggling with their illnesses.  Molly begins a new treatment later this week.  If you would like to donate to their gofundme to help pay the cost of their staggering medical bills, click here.  And please share!  No one should have to bear the burden a one-two-punch like this alone.

People’s Light and Theater Wedding | Heather and Jim

People's light wedding photography_1927

We stood around the kitchen island, dipping chip after chip into cream cheese dip.  It was Monday, a night us girls gathered with pot luck food to indulge in our favorite guilty pleasure: The Bachelor.  Judge if you want, but with our hectic schedules, this weekly dating saga brought us together like glue.  We would usually gather a bit early to eat and catch up and of course discuss online dating.  I always loved hearing Heather’s stories about the first dates she went on.  Yet unlike so many who try online dating, Heather stuck with it.  This particular night, I waited to hear about the latest email or awkward dinner, but instead, Heather smiled and said, “Sooooo…. I met someone.”

From the first mention of Jim, I knew he was different.  My opinion was solidified when he soon began joining us on Monday nights.  Any guy who suffers through The Bachelor just to spend time with their girlfriend is worth it in my books.  With a message in a bottle and a diamond ring many months later, the rest is history.

Jim and Heather were married at People’s Light and Theater in Malvern on a warm June Sunday.  When Jim gave Heather a card just before the ceremony, I was amazed to see a handful of pages slip from the envelope.  As Heather read in silence, she explained that Jim had photocopied every journal entry he had made after each of their dates.  He knew, you see.  He knew from the start.

With palms raised to the sky, eyes closed, and hymns ringing through the garden at People’s Light and Theater, Heather and Jim stood before their dearest friends and family and vowed to love and honor each for eternity. Continue reading “People’s Light and Theater Wedding | Heather and Jim”

West Chester Wedding Photography | People’s Light and Theater | Courtney and Jason

I wish you all could be a fly on the wall as a bride gets ready.  The emotions in the room are electric, and extra hair spray is always required.  While bridesmaids and mothers and makeup gurus buzz about the room, the bride is most often still.  Whenever I steal a glance in her direction, I can instantly see it in her eyes that her thoughts are far far away.  She is thinking of the day, of course, but not in a black and white 24 hour format.  She is thinking of the day that starts the years that leads to the decades that eventually fills in a lifetime with love.  This is the only way I can describe the calm stillness.  Never for a second do I take for granted how privileged I am to be able to bear witness to these special moments.

Courtney is a testament to this type of bride.  There were times before she was in her dress that she was asking me how she could help.  All of her i’s were dotted and t’s were crossed after months of preparation, and she was ready to marry the love of her life.  After a quick flutter of tulle and lace and diamonds, Courtney was on her way to St. Agnes Church in downtown West Chester.

Jason and his guys only had a short walk through downtown to get to the church.  Past shops and restaurant in the midday summer heat, he led his guys on his last walk as an unmarried man.  His naturally calm demeanor was highlighted with the most genuine smile, which peaked and brimmed with a tear the first time he saw Courtney walk through the church doors.

This is love.

Love of two people, and love of two families.  As Courtney and Jason danced the night away (and trust me, they can dance), the constant love and support between their families was inspiring.  The windows at People’s Light and Theater rattled as the party continued well into the night.

Congratulations, dear Courtney and Jason.  Cheers to the lifetime of happiness you made possible when saying I Do. Continue reading “West Chester Wedding Photography | People’s Light and Theater | Courtney and Jason”
